Three Horse Shoes, Allhallows New Inn, New Inn, The Golden Eagle

Allhallows New Inn is listed by Pigot (1823) as being in Bartholomew Street, John Tucker resident. A New Inn is listed by Pigot (1830) in Bartholomew Street, it is highly likely that this is the same inn, especially as the resident is listed as Diana Tucker.

Pring mentions that the pub was in the pig market (1833) in the occupation of John Richards "fee simple" (he owned the pub). This very same John Richards died in February 1834 and was the subject of a notice in the EFP 13th Feb 1834. The pub was known as the New Inn.

The Three Horse Shoes was located in the Pig Market and resident was John Tucker according to a "for sale" notice in the EFP 13th August 1807.

John Tucker also featured in Trewman (1816). He was also a Smith and Farrier, and also in 1822 at Allhallows New Inn. It would appear that the Three Horse Shoes became Allhallows New Inn

Allhallows Church stood at the bottom of Fore Street in 1778, but was rebuilt in Bartholomews yard after New Bridge Street was constructed.

The Golden Eagle was a few doors up from the Exeter Inn in 1876 according to the O.S map. The current location of the Picture House cinema.

Listed by Pigot (1844), resident was Charity Brook, the address of 51 Bartholomew Street given away by White (1850). The last listing I found was 1895. A deed of 1851 refers to the Golden Eagle as "..formerley All Hallows New Inn".

The inn was the subject of a "to let" notice on 26th May 1842 in the Exeter Flying Post and was acquired by ECC in 1906 for road widening for the princeley sum of 380 GBP.

The building was demolished and replaced by a large warehouse that was used by fruit and vegetable merchants Percy Sercombe Ltd who were bought by Elders and Fyffes in 1970. This warehouse was again demolished prior to the construction of the Picture House.
