Beer-houses, Alehouses and Inns on the quayside and on Haven Banks over the river
will have thrived for as long as there was industry. The greatest development in industrial Exeter took place on the
Quay from 1564 onwards with the development of Exeter's first Canal and re-development of the Quayside. The original
canal was called 'the haven', thus Haven Banks. The map above does not show any pubs on the Haven Banks side of the
river because the O.S map of 1876 did not show any. Today there is only the Prospect, Welcome Inn and Double Locks with any great history, but there were many more years ago that for some reason never made the map. These are listed left, click to view.
