UBM Ford
Associated Asphalt Bardon Contracting Aggregate Industries Rockbeare Hill |
First Job and Career
My first job was a paper-round out of the
newsagent in Pinhoe Road. Having left school
I went to Exeter College to learn typing and
was able to get a YTS placement at UBM Ford
on Marsh Barton. I worked here for 1 year
making some good friends including Beryl Spicer.
I then moved to the company that I still
work for now, Associated Asphalt. The company
was sold by ECC Quarries in the early 1990's
to Bardon so there have been several client
confusing name changes over the years.
The company is currently named Aggregate
Industries and we are based at Rockbeare Hill
Quarry, where we moved in early 2004.
Prior to this we had always been based in
Christow Road, Marsh Barton although we did
move premises on one occasion.
The pictures to the centre tell the story!
Aggregate Indusries
Aggregate Industries UK manages and operates the Aggregate Industries plc Group assets within the UK, the
Channel Islands and Norway. It is a major producer and supplier of primary, secondary and recycled
construction aggregates, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete products. The Company also
operates a national contracting business.
Total turnover in 2002 was almost £717.1 million (2001 £587.1 million) and sales volumes comprised 25.3
million tonnes of aggregates, 5.4 million tonnes of asphalt, 1.8 million cubic metres of ready-mixed concrete
and 3.2 million tonnes of precast concrete products.
These activities form an operating platform that provides vertical integration from the supply of primary aggregates through a wide and diverse range of value added products and services into the construction materials
market. The current network of operating locations ensures that over 70% of materials used in the higher
value products are supplied from within the Company. This in turn assures higher value and quality to the
many industrial and private clients that the Company serves.
Aggregate Industries became part of the Holcim Group in March 2005, a Swiss company formed in 1912 with a presence
in more than 70 countries.
